Why Email Marketing Might Be Your Most Powerful Move

A tiny fraction of your social media followers ever sees your posts. But, hold up. Your followers are your followers because they want to hear from you, right?

Nope.

Before I show you a better way (and a seriously underestimated one), let’s look at some truths about social media and ads, especially if you’re counting on them to grow your business and drive traffic to your site.

You can skip ahead to the "better way" section if you want. But first, know the basics.

Social Media Reality Check

It’s not personal, it’s just how the machine works. Algorithms only show your posts if your followers seem genuinely interested. And how do they decide who’s interested? By tracking how often someone likes, taps “more” to read the full post, or clicks a link you shared.

  • Less than 10% of your Instagram followers are ever shown your post.

  • On Facebook, if you have fewer than 1,000 followers, about 25% might see it, and reach drops even lower as your audience grows.

If your followers aren’t consistently reacting to your posts, the platforms lower your visibility even more. Fewer eyes = fewer leads.

Thinking about buying ads? Here’s the catch.

Running ads can seem like the logical next move. ("If I pay, I'll reach more people, right?")

Yes... and no.

While ads on social media and Google can work, there are two major caveats:

  1. They have to be expertly set up (targeting, creative, keywords, geo-locations - the whole deal).

  2. You need the budget to test, refine, and optimize.

Google Ads, for example, can range from $1,000 to $10,000 per month for small to midsize businesses. That’s $12,000 to $120,000 per year, and you still need expert management for real ROI.

Ads can be powerful. But they’re not magic.

Meet Your Secret Weapon: Email.

You probably know by now that we’re diehard fans of organic SEO here. We build strong, lasting relationships with Google and with our clients. And guess what?

Email marketing is one of the highest-ROI channels of them all.

  • It builds connection.

  • It nurtures leads.

  • And it keeps you in control (no algorithms required).

Best of all, you don’t need to be a writer. You just need to show up with something real, helpful, and human.

Not sure what to send? Here are 15 simple ideas:

  1. Thank your customers for being here.

  2. Share a behind-the-scenes peek at your process.

  3. Tell a customer success story.

  4. Offer quick tips that make life easier.

  5. Share favorite tools, books, or resources.

  6. Give a sneak peek at something new.

  7. Bust a myth about your industry.

  8. Answer a common customer question.

  9. Teach them how to get more from your product or service.

  10. Tell a short story about why you do what you do.

  11. Share a free guide, checklist, or template.

  12. Drop a surprising stat or fun fact.

  13. Tie your product to seasonal ideas.

  14. Invite them to reply, comment, or ask a question.

  15. Celebrate a milestone (even the small wins!).

7 - 11 is our personal sweet spot, and we love doing 7 - 9 the most.

How to Start (Even If You’re New)

Already have a subscriber list? Perfect. Dust it off. Start sending. Keep it simple.

Don’t have a list yet? Start building one. Add a quick opt-in form on your website footer or a tasteful pop-up offering a freebie or exclusive updates. Just don’t hit them with a pop-up the second they land. It’s like handing someone an appetizer tray the second they walk into your house. Give them a minute to get comfy.
